GIFTS TO ASKC

The ASKC has a primary mission of educating the public about the science of astronomy. This is done in many ways, such as; public star parties (programs with viewing through telescopes), private star parties, outreach programs to schools, and numerous other public functions throughout the year.

Many assets are used to promote the education of astronomy; assets owned by the club and by its individual members. The club routinely presents programs at Powell Observatory, located in Louisburg, Kansas. The observatory houses the largest publicly available telescope in the Midwest. Members use their own telescopes when doing "off-site" programs to schools, scout groups and civic groups.

All these operations of the club continue to function through our dues, and both public and private donations. These donations currently take care of the utilities, insurance, and upkeep (yes, things do break or need repair). When the time comes for expansion, as in the recent addition of the Louisburg Community Telescope, members and non-members alike often donate their time and equipment to help make these projects a reality. No one within the organization is ever paid a salary for what they do -- we are totally a volunteer organization.

The Astronomical Society of Kansas City is a 501 (c (3) non-profit organization, incorporated in the state of Missouri, we can, in return for your donation, give you a receipt for tax purposes. We accept cash donations and items that can be used at the observatory or for "off-site" functions. For significant contributions, we have a plaque at the observatory that lists those that have contributed. If you would like to make such a donation, please contact our club president, Rick Henderson, for more details. His email address is rhenderson1@JUNKSPAMkc.rr.com (remove the JUNKSPAM), or he can be reached via phone at 913-481-1094.
